{"id":651,"date":"2013-04-15T21:03:50","date_gmt":"2013-04-15T21:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/randomnerdtutorials.com\/?p=651"},"modified":"2019-04-02T10:23:39","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T10:23:39","slug":"circuits-7-segment-displays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/randomnerdtutorials.com\/circuits-7-segment-displays\/","title":{"rendered":"Circuits &#8211; 7 Segment Displays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve decided to write this post to support a bit of the theory behind my new project <a href=\"https:\/\/randomnerdtutorials.com\/arduino-temperature-displayed-on-4-digit-7-segment\/\">(click here to see) <\/a>in which I&#8217;ve used a 7 segment 4 digit display (Common anode).<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How they work:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-653 alignright\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/randomnerdtutorials.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/7_segment_display_labeled.svg_.png?resize=198%2C198&#038;quality=100&#038;strip=all&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"7_segment_display_labeled.svg\" width=\"198\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A 7-segment display is an assembly of light emitting diode-bars (LED segments) each which can be powered individually. The display show the number 8 when all the segments are powered on, an additional 8th the\u00a0&#8216;dot&#8217; or DP, represents the decimal point, usually it\u2019s on right side of the display.<\/p>\n<p>Each one of the seven LEDs in the display is given a positional segment with one of its connection pins, these individually LED pins are labeled from\u00a0a\u00a0through to\u00a0g\u00a0representing each individual LED. The other LED pins are connected together and wired to form a common pin.<\/p>\n<p>So when we use those displays some segments will be light and others will be dark allowing the desired character pattern of the number to be generated on the display. This allows us to display each of the ten decimal digits\u00a00\u00a0through to\u00a09\u00a0on the same 7-segment display.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The are two types of 7-segment displays the common-cathode and the common-anode.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1. The Common Cathode (CC):\u00a0<\/strong>In the common cathode, all the cathode connections of the LED segments are joined\u00a0<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-655\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/randomnerdtutorials.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/COMMON_ANODE_CATHODE.png?resize=300%2C133&#038;quality=100&#038;strip=all&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"COMMON_ANODE_CATHODE\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" \/>\u00a0ogether to logic \u201c0\u2033 or GND. The individual segments are illuminated by application of a \u201cHIGH\u201d, or logic \u201c1\u2033 signal via a current limiting resistor to forward bias the individual Anode terminals (a-g).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2. The Common Anode (CA):<\/strong> In the common anode display, all the anode connections of the LED segments are joined together to logic \u201c1\u2033.
